Your First Week on CPAP: 7 Tips to Get Comfortable
January 20, 2026

Starting CPAP therapy is a big step toward better sleep and better health, but the first few nights can feel strange. That is completely normal. Almost everyone needs a short adjustment period. Here are seven simple tips to help you get comfortable faster.
1. Wear your mask before bed, while you are awake
Put your mask on during the day while you watch TV or read. Getting used to how it feels without the pressure of trying to fall asleep makes bedtime much easier.
2. Make sure your mask fits well
A mask that leaks or pinches is the number one reason people give up. It should feel snug but not tight. If it is not right, call us. We can adjust the fit or try a different style.
3. Use the ramp feature
Most machines have a ramp setting that starts at a low pressure and slowly builds up while you fall asleep. It makes those first few minutes far more comfortable.
4. Try the humidifier
If your nose or throat feels dry, a heated humidifier can help a lot. Many machines have one built in.
5. Keep everything clean
Clean your mask and hose regularly, and consider a CPAP sanitizer to make it effortless. Clean equipment feels better and lasts longer.
6. Give it time
Stick with it for at least a few weeks. Many people notice they have more energy and clearer mornings once their body adjusts.
7. Ask for help early
You do not have to figure this out alone. If something feels off, call us at (973) 707-2042. Small changes often solve big frustrations.
